Magnetic Therapy History
For thousands of years people have been using magnets to help with certain ailments and there have been many legends and writings from our early ancestors who found and used magnetic force, mainly from China, India, Egypt and Greece. By the late 1700’s magnet therapy came to America. In 1795, a Connecticut physician by the name of Elisha Perkins received a patent for his “magnetic tractor” which was a device used to “draw off the noxious electrical fluid that lay at the root of suffering.” Then around 1843, Phineas Quimby, of Portland Maine, established a magnetic healing practice. By the turn of the century medical textbooks were devoting chapters to the use of magnet therapy. One well known magnetic healer was Dr. C.J. Thacher. His company, Chicago’s Magnetic Company, would mail-order pamphlets explaining that the energy responsible for life comes from the magnetic force of the sun and that disease resulted from a stressful lifestyle and environmental factors that disturb the healing process. Thacher believed that by wearing magnetic items, people would be protected and cured of many ailments and diseases. At the time Dr. Thacher was considered a quack by the medical establishment, however, around 1997 a prestigious medical journal described how magnets could be used to relieve many ailments. Today, many people claim to receive relief by using magnets for many ailments such as: Arthritis, Fatigue, Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Stress, and Depression. (1)
